Introduction: GI Genius is a computer-aided detection (CADe) system that is designed to improve the detection of colorectal polyps during colonoscopy procedures. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze real-time colonoscopy images and highlight potential polyps for the endoscopist to examine more closely. This study assesses whether this system can elevate sessile Serrated adenoma detection rate (sADR) in a community private GI practice setting.
Methods: The study analyzed the colonoscopy data of 2746 patients who underwent screening colonoscopies by five endoscopists in a group practice. ADR and sADR were recorded for each endoscopist. In 2022, after the introduction of AI-assisted colonoscopy, ADR and sADR were measured again for the same endoscopists. Statistical analysis, including paired t-tests, was conducted to determine the significance of any changes.
Results: The ADR and serrated ADR values for each endoscopist in the pre-AI and post-AI periods were found to be as follows:
When applied to the group there was a significant difference in ADR and sADR (p-value = 0.006 and 0.009)
Discussion: Based on the results, there was a statistically significant increase in ADR and serrated ADR for Endoscopists 1, 3, and 5, as well as for the group. However, there was no statistically significant difference for Endoscopists 2 and 4 who had high ADRs and serrated ADRs during the pre-AI period, suggesting that they were already proficient at detecting adenomas and serrated adenomas without the assistance of AI. However, these endoscopists still had an increase in ADR which has been shown to have a positive impact in colorectal cancer prevention and which would still argue for the incorporation of AI in all colonoscopies.
