Introduction: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed digestive disorders in the US with a prevalence of about 20% resulting in significant economic burden and significantly affects quality of life of patients. While anti-reflux medications are effective, there are concerns about long term side effects of its chronic use. In the past years, several non-medication options have come out of the market. One of them is the Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF), which is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed endoscopically by Gastroenterologist to help patients with GERD. With the procedure being minimally invasive, it is likely to result in faster recoveries and less complications than more invasive procedures. As more people are affected by this disease, the more they are going to look for new solutions. One way of searching for solutions is through online search engines such as Google.
Case Description/Methods: The term “transoral incisionless fundoplication” was inputted into the platforms of Google Trends and PubMed to gain values from the years 2017-2022. A time series forecasting was performed to predict the future interest in TIF based on observed trends. Poisson regression analysis was used to evaluate difference in Google Trends and PubMed searches with a significance level of 0.05. SPSS software version 29.0. was used to analyze the data. On an average 15.5, 2004, and 2462.8 PubMed Global, Google Trend USA and Global searches respectively were made over the last 5-yrs. Public interest both in the US and globally as well as the scientific community is predicted to increase over the next 3-yrs based on previous trends. R square is 0.63 and 0.73. There was no significant difference between the groups with a p value of 0.001.
Discussion: As more people worldwide are affected by GERD, they are looking for better solutions, more than just medications. There is both a national and international increase in the search for minimally invasive alternatives to assist in the treatment of GERD, specifically TIF. As the public interest increases as well as within the scientific community, more Gastroenterologist may need to have training, equipment, and facilities to be able to perform procedures such as Transoral incisionless fundoplication.
